Anyone who lives, breathes, dreams design will understand the following: sometimes, you become fixated on something design-y, and then —like learning a new word that you start to hear everywhere — you start to see that design-y thing everywhere (much to your delight, but also much to your chagrin because you WANT.IT.) Well, that is me currently with colored glass and mirrors.
I first sniffed out colored mirrors last year at a handful of designer booths at Sight Unseen’s Offsite during NYCxDesign week, only to spot the possible trend again in early April at Salone de Mobile in Milan and during Spring Market in High Point, North Carolina. Is it safe to say this is becoming a thing? I’m going to declare it, in hopes that it is. Not because I wish to turn everything I love into a trend, but because it’ll be far more accessible if it were indeed something buzzing in the design world.
Below are some of the pieces that have me ga-ga, mostly high design products, but one from West Elm that’s totally reachable! Check them out, and let me know what you think!
This chair by Amsterdam-based design studio Germans Ermics has made its rounds since Salone de Mobile this past April. You may have seen it throughout the design blogosphere, and it’s worth mentioning again. I can’t imagine sitting on this and being comfortable, but the ombre/rainbow coloring on the glass is so stunning; it’s hard to look away.
You can see this table in situ in the lead image of this post. I saw it in person in Milan at the furniture fair’s Satellite section (for up-and-coming designers), and the layering of colored glass is subtle but beautiful. From one angle, it looks like delicate blue and yellow; from another (top down), it looks yellow, blue and green as the see-through glass colors mix to create something all new. Bravo to Tokyo designer Daisuke Kitagawa for this one.
Bonpart’s glass coffee table (another find from this year’s SaloneSatellite) is petite but powerful.
I’m particularly smitten with the smoky shades of colored glass, and especially love it for tabletop items, like this vase from Turkish design studio Nude Glass .
Oh Patricia Urquiola , you’ve done it again. Her Liquefy tables are a true work of art. They are certainly a strong look, and I’m not convinced I’d have them in my own home, but I can certainly appreciate how mesmerizing they are (in both pink and green).
Available via West Elm for $79 each , I just love the sophisticated hues of these colored oblong mirrors. These are a great, affordable way to bring this look into your home that will look totally unique and modern.
